Your cost for a position includes the trading fee you paid when you bought, and the position’s value is based on current market prices, which can sit a little below the price you paid. Right after you buy, this can make the position look slightly down even if the market has not moved. If you bought with a dollar amount, any part of it that was not used stays in your cash balance and is not counted in your cost.
